Desoldering machine made from old shopvac
(1/1)
Ferroto:
I picked up a $10 mini shopvac at a yard sale and 3d printed an adapter to attach a standard solder sucker. It works fairly decently however I'm going to have to install a leaf switch and a relay to turn the vacuum on and off.

Neat idea! watch out for overheating of the shopvac motor though. I believe they are cooled by the air flowing through them, which is now greatly reduced by the small orifice of the solder sucker. Adding a few holes to the hose upstream from the tip should allow more airflow.
ChristofferB:
Neat! You can get heated solder suckers as well, which would fit right on, but my experience with normal vacuum desoldering stations is that the tips oxidize and dissolve, so replaceable tips are a must.
Maybe you should put in a bypass hole to keep the engine cool, that you could cover with a finger when you want full vacuum.
