Detection method for coilgun?

(1/1)

JustClaire:
Hello! I am currently thinking of making a coilgun as a project, and i have a question. What is better to use for projectile detection? As i need to disable the coil once the projectile is in the middle of it, I need some form of detection for the projectile. I was thinking of using IR sensors, however their responce time is quite slow and may be insufficient. What would be the best way to detect that the projectile is in the middle of the coil? Thank you for help)

Check out
-Photodiodes
-Phototransistors
-LDRs

i forget which is fastest but i know one is much better than the others when it comes to speed.

Doesn't much matter.  The above differ by ~100us (give or take how an LDR would be used; they're an abomination), in which time the projectile has moved little.  Even if you manage to achieve sonic speed, that's only ~0.3mm/us, enough to deserve some consideration with a bright LED and a good photodiode, say.
