Difference between 74hc688 and M74HC688M ?
« on: August 11, 2012, 05:29:34 pm »
Hi all,

Is there a difference between 74HC688 and M74HC688M ?

Also between 4514 and NTE4514B.

And..... 74HC32 and 74HC32N, 74HC32D, MC74HC32N, MM74HC32M, NTE74HC32

Clearly there is a difference, but is it relevant to me ? Are these parts interchangeable ?

The schematic is on page 66 here

The prefix may indicate manufacturer (NTE4514B is most likely an overpriced NTE part, MC will be an ON Semi part). The suffix will usually indicate package type or temperature range. I believe N and D stand for DIP and SOIC for NXP parts. Other vendors may assign different meanings. Electrically they should all be compatible, unless you rely on some unspecified behavior.

Ok,

Disregarding the prefix then, I have two dilemmas.

For 74HC688 I can choose 74HC688D or M74HC688M. So assuming D means DIP I will choose the former. But I would like to know what M is, the datasheet does not specify.

Then for 4514,

I can choose

MA4514R @ $63
CD4514DB-3 @ $25
CD4514BEX @ 2

CD4514BE @ 1, package PDIP
http://pdf1.alldatasheet.com/datasheet-pdf/view/26909/TI/CD4514BE.html

NTE4514B @ 2, package DIP
http://www.datasheetarchive.com/dataframe.php?file=DSAP001428.pdf&dir=Datasheets-115&part=NTE4514B#

The 4514 in the schematic has pins Y0-Y15 however Y12,Y13,Y14,Y15 seem to go nowhere. I suppose that means unused ?
NTE4514B has pins labeled S0-S13.

Unsure...

Appears 74HC688D is SOIC. 74HC688N is DIP. Where can I find the key to the suffix for a manufacturer ?

The manufacturer's data sheet will usually list all the package variations and their suffixes.

There is no real commonality for suffixes, most manufacturers will use a common scheme across the range they supply, but some have differences. Only way to be sure is to look at the manufacturers data sheet for the part. Some suffixes also indicate a different pinout in the same package.

Thanks guys,

You were right it was all in the datasheets. I was looking at the short / incomplete versions.
