Modular plugs and stranded/solid wire
« on: March 23, 2020, 02:17:17 am »
Years ago I would specify Ethernet 8P modular plugs for use with either solid or stranded conductors.

I look on Mouser now and using the parameter search, there's no filter for solid/stranded wire.

Have things changes such that present offerings can be used universally? Or...?

Thanks.

There are some universal types (three prongs on the contact), but otherwise, still the usual split. Most don't know of it, doesn't surprise me Mouser don't have a filter for it.

The few times I mentioned the fact (unique plugs for each wire type) I got blank stares.

One of those secret facts that probably causes lots of intermittent problems in the industry...

There are some universal plugs, but stranded wire is by far the standard.  Anything you get that doesn't specify you should assume is for stranded.

Field termination of plugs is also much less common than jacks.  Normally you use solid wire for your horizontal run with jacks on both sides and premade stranded cables to connect to the switch and end device.
