Title: Diy Hot Plate
Post by: Arcamax123 on June 23, 2016, 04:22:13 am
I am planning on making a hot plate with a chunk of aluminium on top... I would like some ideas on how to do this.

How about some design specifics. Size, max temp, heat rate, power supply (AC/DC voltage power)? Plate thickness. Why Aluminium? What sort of temperature control do you need?
What do you want to heat?
Well I guess it doesn't need to be aluminium. I want to stick something on top to heat things up with... a lower temperature, 6 or 7inch square maybe. Need options lol

There are tons of heated beds available for 3D printers about that size, try searching Reprap heated bed.

I made a one like this last year - I used aluminium to make the machining easier with the limited tools I have.

The exact design will depend on what you want to do with it, but you can make a basic hotplate using the aluminium, cartridge heaters and a PID temperature controller.  If you use mains powered heaters make sure you earth the hotplate and use a fuse too.

Its slightly bigger than you want, but you'd have to put in a lot of work to beat something like: https://www.amazon.com/Presto-07211-Liddle-Griddle/dp/B00006IUWL (https://www.amazon.com/Presto-07211-Liddle-Griddle/dp/B00006IUWL)

Hi

You can buy hot plates on eBay or Craigs List  for next to nothing at all. Unless you already have a pile of parts ready to go, $10 or $20 spent there is the best bet. What does your design need to do that the used commercial unit does not do?
