Title: DIY Wireless BlueTooth Gaming headset project.
Post by: Jackster on November 27, 2012, 01:06:09 pm
Hi all. Newish here.

I have an old gaming headset.

They are really nice but come with crap cables to plug into a 3.5mm jack.

So what I want to do is make them into a wireless bluetooth headset.

I want to be able to use the mic though so need to upload a channel and download two for left and right speakers.

I found this KC-5190 "Bluetooth Audio Hi Power Module" at http://kcwirefree.com/audio.html (http://kcwirefree.com/audio.html)

So as you can see,,, bit small. Good for fitting into the headset. Bad for wiring up as it is made to be put onto a PCB and not cabled up.

The chip does everything I need. It also allows you to have it charge a battery from either a 4-6v line or via the USB lines. (IDK the tech terms for the copper bits.. )

So perfect chip in every way but the size.
I guess I could get someone to print me a breakout board to fit what I need?

Anyone got any other "modules" that would be suitable for what I need?

Thank you.

I think sparkfun sell some bluetooth audio modules.
Might pay to check those out.

Thanks for that.

I see that they are out of stock.

But found this on eBay. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Bluetooth-SMD-Module-RN-42-/321018506280?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item4abe31ac28&_uhb=1 (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Bluetooth-SMD-Module-RN-42-/321018506280?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item4abe31ac28&_uhb=1)

Just got a email from kcwirefree.

They have new versions of the board and it comes with a breakout boards too this time.

Asked if they could just ship it in a envelope as they use FedEx atm who charge $35 :/

I hope they allow me as it is a one off.

Just got another email from them.

$3.75 for it to be posted in a bubble envelope. WIN!

So probably going to be around the £30 mark which is a bit high for me. Going to see if I can get them to discount me as I am a student :P

Just want to make sure as I am not the best at electronics but is this going to be what I want?

There is a data sheet here http://www.kcwirefree.com/docs/KC5190_Datasheet.pdf (http://www.kcwirefree.com/docs/KC5190_Datasheet.pdf)
The new one is pretty much the same by the looks of things. Just general improvements.

Headset wise there are 2 channels for speakers and a mono mic that will be split to stereo for the mic in.

USB for charging a 3.6V 3600mAh Lithium Battery.

Thank you.

Found this. RS232 TTL Transceiver Module http://bit.ly/V7mcEL (http://bit.ly/V7mcEL)

It is only £4 so massive savings. http://bit.ly/SiqN6r (http://bit.ly/SiqN6r)

From first glance it is something I can use. But it is not designed for audio so need some sort of audio driver.

Those over ear headphones don't usually have a ton of room behind the drivers in the ear cups.  Where are you going to put those boards and batteries?  I've got this picture in my mind of you wearing headphones with a big project box housing a hacked together Bluetooth module and 9V battery hanging from the cable a couple inches down smacking you in the head every time you look around.

Got loads of room in mine. They are big cups. There is enough room for battery on the right one and the PCB on the left.

Found a better module.  £12 with postage but does the job.

Thinking if it is worth just going with the KCwirefree part.

Was going to get this £10 one from coolcomponents bur I would also need a USB to Lithium-ion battery charger and a few other thing. Adding to the amount needed inside.

Going with the KCwirefree part has all the USB charging and other things I need. Only other thing I would need is a simple stereo amp.

So it is worth it for the all in one double the price?

I am in need of some sort of way to turn the device off and volume up/down.

Was thinking of some small ones in the mic arm but I don't want to start making holes.

So I thought what about the same thing as inside my keyboard.

Flat Membrane Switch http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/DC-12V-1-Key-Matrix-DIY-Flat-Membrane-Switch-Control-Keypad-New-/360520222899?pt=UK_BOI_Electrical_Components_Supplies_ET&hash=item53f0ae08b3&_uhb=1 (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/DC-12V-1-Key-Matrix-DIY-Flat-Membrane-Switch-Control-Keypad-New-/360520222899?pt=UK_BOI_Electrical_Components_Supplies_ET&hash=item53f0ae08b3&_uhb=1)

Can put it in the top of the headband that is a soft foam that I will be able to hind them under so I can press parts of the top for volume up down and power.

Well it has only been a few weeks.... more like months since I started this project and have finally go somewhere :)

All electronics done, well need to make a switch for the power.

Sound is great.

Took so long because the original bluetooth board had a problem. KCWireFree sent me out a new one for free and it worked out the box!

Need some longer screws and to get the red spacers 3D printed but 3x as thick to accommodate the PCB and battery.
