Dow Corning 738
« on: May 31, 2019, 01:33:10 am »
I picked up a new tube and it will not cure.   It's supposed to use the moisture in the air.  After 24 hours, I tried heating it, no luck.  I just finished pulling the project back apart and cleaning up the mess.  None of it appeared to have cured.

I'm curious if anyone else has run into this.

It happened to me with different manufacturer. It never cured and made such a bad mess I phoned and flamed the manufacturer (GE), they replaced the product but had to toss the boards.

The Dow 738 product has a 7 month shelf life, I would check the date/batch. It could have been sitting on a shelf for a long time or maybe got frozen.
It still relies on moisture in the air to cure, but low RH has never been the reason for troubles.
So far, it's old silicone that doesn't harden, with the new formulas.

It's very possible it's out of date then.  Something I would never have thought of as I've had silicone that has sat for literally years and still cured.  I have some that I use to secure the master links on my chains that I think is close to 5 year old now, it is stored in an outside trailer and it still cures.   There must me something unique to this product or I have been very lucky over the years.
