DSP 5015 with/withouth USB port
« on: September 27, 2018, 08:36:59 am »
I have two DSP5015 one is with USB and another is withouth USB.
And when checking port there is no connector on DSP withouth USB. Is it possible I can just add connector and connect USB port on it or I also need to change firmware of that DSP? Did anyone try to upgrade it with USB port?

I don't really understand your question.
So you have a DSP 5015 without USB board?

Well, it's simple.

You need a CH340G Serial/USB chip, a few caps, resistors and a crystal.
Or if you don't want to do alot. Just buy the module or buy this cheap alternative;

I don't think you need to change firmware. I think the firmware is the same for both models.

I already have a module, question was If there are some changes in firmware.
I will test it.

Ok. Can you give me a link to the firmware and I'll look at it when I have some spare time. I think they are the same, but I can't say for sure unless I look at the file itself.

The DPS manufacturer in china was on the forums (user RD Tech) albeit promoting new products I guess too much so he got banned.  I didn't mind his few posts  :-//
https://www.eevblog.com/forum/projects/androide-app-for-communication-version-of-dps5005-and-dps3005-dps8005/msg1646399/#msg1646399

Of the three DPS versions: "no communication", "communication+USB", "communication+BT"  :
"3. For no communication version, there is no communication program and hardware to support, not any communication function, can't be updated."
From: https://www.aliexpress.com/store/product/RD-DPS5015-Constant-Voltage-current-Step-down-Programmable-digital-Power-Supply-buck-Voltage-converter-color-LCD/923042_32702714880.html
Since the metal enclosures block RF and are no good for Bluetooth comms, there is some mention of that.

I take that to mean the firmware is missing comms. You could try PM the guy or email them.
They sell just the USB/BT modules which is weird if you can't add them on.

I tried to look for the firmware but wasn't able to find it in a quick hurry. Have to continue working now so can look at it later. I will order a DSP module myself, I still need a proper bench power supply. I am now using a modified HP G3 DL380 PSU for my 12 volt stuff. But it's a overkill(supply can deliver 20 or 30 amps) and the fan makes a terrible noise, when GND and PS_ON are grounded.

Contact the chinese seller here;
https://rdtech.aliexpress.com/store/923042
(hover to "Store:RD official store", and there's the contact now button)

Also interesting to read (if you like poking around with debuggers and ide's);

The firmware is different on the basic version and the communication version. The only way to get the communication version of the firmware is to buy it like that. They don't allow user upgrades.

The alternative is to reflash the DPS5015 with OpenDPS. The UI, features and control utility completely change though and there may be some calibration needed.

Probably banned because they were using a sockpuppet account to advertise some of their other products.

Hm thanks for this information, that should save me, and a few other people from cutting down on the cost of the module and afterwards finding out that it actually sucks to operate without BT/USB module.
I did read the blogpost of the guy who reflashed his 5015 with OpenOCD. Last thing to notice then is, how accurate is it compared to the original calibrated firmware. I would rather not touch it unless you really hate it or want to modify it that bad.

Edit; I meant OpenOCD, not OpenDPS.

I have contacted a guy from aliexpress rdtech store.
And his English is really bad and as far as I understand what he said is that firmware is the same for version 1.6.
I am waiting for his response to confirm me that.
I will let you know.

1.6? I bought my DPS5015 before they released the communication version and it came with 1.15 firmware so them saying 1.6 is odd. I asked RD Tech before and they said that the firmware was different and that it isn't possible to upgrade as they won't send anybody the compiled firmware. The product page still says it is different.

I guess they've changed their mind for the modules with communication/no communication since the difference in price is only a few bucks for the USB and/or Bluetooth module. Easier for them to do stock control if there is only a single DPS5015 and the difference is just the bundled items.

I asked them once, they said it wont work. At least that's what I guessed from their poor English.

However, you may try OpenDPS. It's and open source firmware for DPS supplies. You will need to flash it with STlink.

I did it with a DPS5020 which didn't have the connector.

Just soldered in a Molex connector and it did work.

Although I wouldn't go with bluetooth again. It's a bit frustrating connecting to it.

As you are from Germany I bought the following parts from Reichelt:
MOLEX 530470410 Molex Stiftleiste - PicoBlade - 1x4-polig - Stecker
JOY-IT DPS BT DPS Labornetzgerät, Erweiterung, Bluetooth
