Ebay LM3914 ICs
(1/2) > >>
Signal Simon:
Does anyone have experience of the DIP LM3914s available on Ebay and the like at a very cheap price?

Photos all seem to show the elliptical style National Semiconductor logo and with markings in a variety of fonts.

Just wondering if these things are any good - are they new old stock, recovered units or, new fakes?

I know TI still make the SMD but not the DIP version. I've done my 30 bargraph PCB design based on the SMD version (from a mainstream supplier) then found out how difficult that package is to solder without a reflow oven (I've got a 4-element 1200W mini oven to convert) - and to top it off I've missed the tracks between MODE on U2 to LED1 on U5,  and MODE on U5 to LED1 on U7 (hence the bodge wires) so i'm going to need a board respin anyway.

I have bought a few fake Prolific UARTs from "eBay and the likes". They worked. One I destroyed, another I thought I had destroyed :palm: Decapped both, each different. Looked at zeptobars pictures of two another PL2303 dies, neither was like mine.

I also decapped some fake DS18B20 and found two different variants too. One of them was atrocious garbage, the other just crappy.

It's called Chinese roulette for a reason :D You never know what you get.

I hadn't thought of that option, but I think I will just go with soldering to the board....in a more appropriate manner!

I've done all my SMD assembly and repair with a conventional iron up to now, as I've used SOICs and 0805 or larger passives.

In the interim I think I will be buying a hot air tool - and ordering a solder paste stencil with the new PCB.
