Heating glasses
« on: December 25, 2021, 10:43:05 pm »
Thinking how to mod a pair of glass glasses to be heated to avoid fogging (right now using soap which is not very convenient with the condensation and having to re-apply it and freezing in wind with negative temperatures).
Avoiding the contact of the moist warm air with the glasses is not an option because this is intentional in my case to provide warmth for the eyes in the cold (basically wearing a scarf or a mask to direct the exhaled air up to the eyes)

Thinking of somehow attaching a nichrome wire along the top of the lenses but cannot figure out how to bond it. Tried super glue with table soda and it held well until it got hot, then it just peeled off easily, the superglue melted and become mirror-smooth at the interface with the glass.

There are some high temperature epoxies out there, but I haven't found one yet.
I have this thermally conductive epoxy compound for potting electronics but it doesn't stick to glass well and is too soft (rubbery like).

I'm thinking maybe there's some other way, maybe a conductive sticky film or something, e.g. like they use on rear windows or cars, but it has to be thin and high resistance enough for glasses.

ItO / Gold film. Not something easily applied at home for most  folks. You'll have to sense its temperature by monitoring it's resistance.

A hyper hydrophobic film might buy you more time then soap.

Have a talk with Oakley, they make interesting things for professional protective eyeware with coatings. So I'm told.

Detroit used a conductive paint once upon a time that needed special processing.

Have you considered using contact-lenses. I have using lenses for over 25 years and would never go back to only glasses.
If you ever start using lenses get one-day lenses because this is simplest to use.

geggi1, I need the glasses for the same reason I need the warm air, to keep the eyes warm, I do have short sightedness but that's not my main reason for wearing glasses outside in cold weather.
