favourite RJ12 tester?
« on: January 27, 2020, 07:24:29 am »
Anyone have a favourite RJ12 cable tester? Ideally that gives a clear audio warning after you've told it what kind of cable you're expecting (in my case 4 wires, maybe that's RJ11). And that indicates which wires are concerned in the issue, to aid figuring out which crimp needs redoing.

They tend to look pretty similar with LEDs at each end that flash in sequence. Problem I just had with mine (a cheapo) is that somehow I missed a crossed-wire scenario, which resulted in several blown buck converters on my boards (I thought it was a snubber issue) and a lot of wasted time.

My personal favorite RJ11, RJ12 and RJ45 as well as coax tester is the Fluke MS2. I have the kit with the sorting dongles that has paid for itself many times over.  The sorting dongles can be a real time saver.  This device also shows the cable length and/or the length to a fault

I also would suggest the crimp ends that have through holes for the wires like these:  I have crimped over a thousand of these (RJ45) and only had one that had a bad connection.

Think I could live with that Fluke setup.

Pity that RJ11/12 don't seem to exist in pass-through. That would indeed eliminate a whole bunch of errors.
