TI BQ24450 - Voltage on pins when supply voltage is 0/floating?
« on: November 01, 2018, 01:28:53 pm »
I am looking at building a circuit using a TI BQ24450 Lead-Acid battery charger controller. This is for an application where the simplicity and robustness of a sealed lead-acid is desirable. I am aware that the part is NRND, but this is a one-off build and I have a dozen or so spares.

The goal is for this charger to go in the same large enclosure (flight-case) as the battery. The enclosure will then have a standard C14 connector on the front panel that can be used to plug the box in to charge it up. I'm still not 100% sure on how the voltage will go from mains AC to DC, but likely a simple transformer + bridge rectifier will be used.

What I am now wondering about is whether or not it is ok for a voltage to be applied across some of the pins of the IC, when the power is disconnected. I would usually assume not (ESD protection and all that), but in this case I get the impression from some of the example schematics in the datasheet that it is ok. There is also nowhere it is explicitly stated it isn't allowed (at least from what I could tell, but I am not that good at reading datasheets so I could have missed it).

Anyone have any input on this? If I can just allow the charger to remain connected to the battery without power applied, this would mean I can get rid of yet another switch and user operation, which is very desirable. However, I don't want to risk it not being ok and me blowing up the few parts I have.
