When looking for schottky diode for load dump protection would I need to look out for? Would MBR1100 (http://www.jameco.com/Jameco/Products/ProdDS/312101ONS.pdf) be sufficient for 100V spikes?
You need a TVS (transient voltage suppression) diode, not a Schottky diode. Also check the datasheet of the TVS for the clamping voltage, not the breakdown voltage. In some cases there can be a large difference between those two voltages, for instance 200V vs 324V for an SMCJ200CA.
