Source for this gold binding post?
« on: May 27, 2013, 04:49:42 am »
Does anyone know a source for this gold binding post? (apart from Altronics)
http://www.altronics.com.au/index.asp?area=item&id=P2000
The one on the left in the photo below with the raised panel keying is the Altronics one I want.
The one on the right with just the round thread is the only one I have been able to source elsewhere after extensive searching. But I need the one with the panel keying.
No, Altronics will not tell me who their source is, and charging too much, and have ridiculous lead times for bulk.
Yes, I have tried countless Alibaba sources, but have had no luck.
Thanks.

why do you need keying? Loctite is not enough?

Because it's 100% effective, forever. And no extra production step required.

Dave, the pictures don't show the details very clearly but the seller says they do have the panel keying bit: http://item.taobao.com/item.htm?spm=a230r.1.14.219.2NfFhM&id=13198578895&_u=roemap3cb1b

I can order a couple of these to have closer look if you like.

Franky,
I found this enlarged image of the binding posts, via your supplied link. Maybe the photo will supply enough detail for Dave.

Regards,
Frank

I went ahead and ordered a few anyway, just because I'm curious ;D They are cheap enough to be dumped into the parts bin for the rainy days even if Dave doesn't want them   :P

Those actually look like RadioShack binding posts... of course I'm not sure if they still sell them. Try searching futurlec.com or even mouser/digikey

So, out of curiosity, what is it about those binding posts that you like, other than the keying?

Glue of any sort is a PITA for production unless you have a fully automatic dispensing & placement process - getting the right amount in the right place consistently, spillage, curing time etc. all slow things down and open up multiple error possibilities.

Mike's Electric Stuff: High voltage, vintage electronics etc.
Day Job: Mostly LEDs

That and loctite only prevents rotation of the nut relative to the post. The keying with the D on it makes sure the alignment of the hole though the binding post never changes, and is always the how you intended.  Binding posts that spin when you crank down on them by hand =  :--

Using adhesives also has a downside, that manufacturer has to perform chemical safety assessment and all the related stuff (which varies from country to country). Of course they will happily do that for you, and same as happily charge you for it in this form or another.

Bennic is probably the OEM, and they do take orders directly (though I'm not sure what the MOQs would be like).  I think BP11, BP18 or BP18U will be the ones you want, with the D suffix for keying.

Here's a close-up picture of the binding posts I ordered from Taobao. They do have the panel keying part.

Thanks, yes they look like the ones.
The key on the Altronics ones are 5.13mm x 3.93mm
Are the Taobao ones the same?
I presume it's some sort of defacto standard of sorts?
That matters because the PCB cutout has to match that and not be too loose.

Yep, the BP11 looks like the one. Great to have an actual reference, thanks.

The ones I've got measure 5.37mm x 3.97mm. Close enough?

Got'em thanks!
Perfect fit.
So would I be able to buy these through you in volume?
And should I plug your ebay store?  ;D

Glad they fit well! Yes, I can help you order in volume too. Just PM me your requirements (volume, time, etc) and I will see what I can do.

No need to plug my eBay store just because of this. I try not to come across too much like a “spammer” who's here just to sell :) In fact, I'd much rather have more time to do some learning and experimenting myself too!

No need to plug my eBay store just because of this.

It's in your footer anyway  ;D
