Hack Bosch ABS for off-road use
« on: April 09, 2021, 04:17:09 pm »
Hello Mates,

I own a 85 Engesa Jeep, quite similar to a Wrangler or so. This vehicle has a very little weight over the rear axle and is very common to the rear wheels lock before the front reaches the maximum breaking capacity.

I've done a small research and the best candidate to install would be the Bosch ABS 8.1 (0 265 956 008) from a donor Ford Ranger, due to access to wiring schematics and easiness to get on the scrapyard.

The thing is: the car won't have ford can to communicate them I'll always get a code.

Is there any configuration tool or may to reflash a bosch 8.1 or 9.0?

I wish I could affoard a bosch motorsport M4 abs but, meh, whats the fun in that?

Some problems are  the peripherals like the abs  traction control systems  etc .... are sometimes serial matched in the main ecu ...   meaning  you can not fit or make it work until the "Brain" accept them ???

You'll need the softwares and jbod adapters  etc ...

On my Suzuki SUV, everything is serial coded and entered in the ECU, even if i change my abs pump for the same part,  it will not work   ...

The older the system, the more standalone they tend to be. I know the Bosch ABS in my Volvo is more or less standalone, it has a separate control box and takes signals from the brake light switch and speedometer IIRC. A good place to start is the service manual for the prospective donor vehicle.

Yes, but i would assume it is not that critical for an off-road vehicle.
ABS is an important system and should work w/o CAN bus in basic mode. Bus failure is not that uncommon malfunction.

Advanced features of ABS unit, like ESC, TCS, EDL do rely on CAN communication and a bunch of additional sensors, so they would not be available anyway.
