Gas discharge tube voltage rating selection
« on: April 26, 2020, 06:22:02 am »
Hi

I dont have experience with GDT, so i wanted to ask if a Gas Discharge Tube with a DC Sparkover ±20 % @ 100 V/s voltage rating of 470V is suitable for AC mains 230Vrms +-20V protection. Often if not every time you see GDT with a rating of 600V for mains protection (230Vrms), why ? Why not 500V or even 470V ?

470V +-20% would be 376V min, which is close to the Vpeak of 353 @ max 250Vrms AC mains.

Protecting L to PE, N to PE and L to N....do you think that using 3 discrete 2-Terminal GDTs would be more robust in terms of protection than using one with 3-Terminals ?
