Glueing two 50mm cables
« on: April 05, 2019, 03:52:28 am »
What would be the best adhesive to glue two 50mm cables together. These are car booster cables. They identify get tangled when left as is so I wanted to glue them together.

I read polyurethane is the best type of adhesive to use. Any suggestions other wise ?

Thanks in advance.

50mm?  That's nearly the diameter of a redbull can.  What are you boosting, an M1 Abrams?

I think I would join them with zip ties or short lengths of heat shrink at suitable intervals along the cable.

That is pretty much the standard way of doing this sort of thing---I would particularly suggest the heat shrink be the self adhesive kind, too.

If only there was something you could buy to tie cables together...  They could call it a cable tie

Oopsy daisy ! It’s 50mmSq.

I though of zip ties but over long use it would break of eventually. Polyurethane glue are those used to join leather. So I guess they are flexible I guess with two zip ties on either ends and this adhesive in the middle.

Stretchy 'self gluing' ?   silicone 'Rescue Tape' at 50cm or 1 meter intervals

= No cable tie bumps and breaks,

No heatshrink headaches taking off connectors to slide on

No gunky, unwinding, slimy, sliding electrical or duct tape in hot weather

Problem solved  :-+

I was looking for something is commonly available. Rescue tape does not seem to be available here or probably by that name.

How is the glue that I had mentioned earlier ? It’s commonly used here to stick shoe and carpets I think.

You never know if and or what petroleum products/additives and other stuff are in some glues,
which may or may not affect the cables.

Not sure how well gobs of hot glue would work and hold up, may even burn the cable   :scared:

A 'simple' and quicker cable fav of mine that won't break the wallet too much is a few turns of good electrical tape at 50cm to 1 meter intervals (or whatever 'feels' right and behaves)
and cable tie on top of each tape up,
that once tightened gets a flush cut with sharp cutters, so no bits sticking out from the cable tie.

If the cable tie is long enough, you can try doing two turns with it for more grip and less of a single point tight spot

The tape is also a good buffer to keep the cable ties from cutting in to the cable in case of a disaster  :o

It's a bit cumbersome and a bumpy ride on bare hands when rolling the lot up, but serves well enough and should last a long time and dragging around abuse

BTW Keep some spare tape and cable ties for repairs if any ever break off or get brittle with age and weather exposure.

FWIW: I use this method when I need a 'do it once and never think again' cable loom of dual or multiple cables.   :phew:
and my custom made 7 meter real deal booster cables are done this way

Plastic/nylon adjustable garden hose clips are another option worth a look at too

Good luck mate  :-+

Forget glue. Use cable ties or heat shrink, as others already said. (There’s no reason to assume cable ties will fail.)

Polyester conduits, https://www.tme.eu/dk/en/katalog/polyester-conduits_113545/

Maybe it's another word for mesh sleeving? IDK :)

I doubt these sleeping would stand a chance against the weight of the cable and the misuse.

For now I’ve twisted the cable and secured them with the thickest cable ties.

heavy cable you want to use spring steel tape. Just make sure the insulation is protected.

Consider heavy abrasion resistant braids too.

Forgot who the tape is sold by, its used for those ultra heavy duty cable splices but there is no reason it would not work to bind two cables together. Its called constant force tape or something like that.

like this

https://www.swaonline.co.uk/sundries/constant-force-springs/constant-force-springs

That one says for electrical binding without solder or crimping, but I am pretty sure I saw it used on exterior insulation in some videos.
