Good potting compound
« on: April 18, 2020, 10:39:23 pm »
Hi all,

I want to connect 3 conventional domestic electric water heater elements (4.8kw each)  together to a small box, and then submerge the lot into a water tank.

The connections in the box will then go to a 3 phase flex cable.

I was thinking of using a waterproof box but I have my doubts that it will stay dry inside.

The next thought is to just use any non-waterproof box and just fill it with potting compound.

I have never used potting compound before. Is this a valid solution for potting compound? Or will the water just wick through the cables and get into the connectors?

Depth is only 1m.  Looking for recommendations on what brand of compound to use. I guess a flexible type might be best? I'm in Australia so RS or Element14 are preferred.

I don't know about submerging a three phase connection but would expect that there is a recognised method and standard which would incorporate approved and certified products. It's not the type of job you want to do unless you are properly qualified and the work is done correctly and to the appropriate standard. The linked thread and video below may be of some assistance.

Thanks for the link. Gurosil looks good but also looks like RS has discontinued the product... I'll try the RS silicon dielectric gel unless anyone else has any other ideas.....
