On board IC exposure and use
« on: January 30, 2015, 11:24:46 am »
Hello i recently got a blown cheap multimeter from a friend and i was harvesting smd components of of it.Then i got an idea to expose the IC (which is under the black blob thing) and cut a hole on the circuit board to use it as a keychain piece.
But i have a few concerns ...
What item should i use for scraping the blob and will the pcb hold onto the keychain or it will break?

I have scratched some of the blob off with scissors but this is very inaccurate...

So im open for advice thank you . :D

the black blob is epoxy. it's not easy to remove without powerful chemicals, although if you heat it long and hot enough with a hot air gun it will become frangible.
there are reports that dichloromethane and methyl-ethyl ketone can soften epoxy blobs. the problem is, how will they react with the epoxy of the PCB? they are available at hardware stores, but you still should always treat chemicals with caution and respect.

A hot air gun makes that crumble in a couple minutes at most, no need to use crazy chemicals.
