I'd like to build a device that can control and monitor my pool pump's energy consumption.  Devices like the Sonoff POW (and other "smart outlets/switches") don't work with inductive loads like pumps.

Basically I'd like to connect a microcontroller (esp8266, etc) to a contactor to switch my pump on/off, but then I want to monitor the current as well.  I could use current clamps but I'm hoping for something hard-wired.

From the Sonoff POW schematic it uses an ESP8266 and 10A relay and HLW8012 energy metering IC with 1mohm 2512 current-sense resistor. The IC seems to calculate active power and should work with inductive loads as it's not a dumb power meter that ignores power factor. What leads you to believe it doesn't work with inductive loads?

A centrifugal pump draws pretty much constant power, assuming it's not sucking air or the valves closed so I would not expect much interesting from trending power consumption.

Use a current transformer on one of the supply leads.  The output may need a little conditioning but then just run it to an ADC pin on the processor.
