Inductor selection for DC/DC
« on: July 01, 2012, 07:52:55 pm »
Hello,

I'm designing a DC to DC converter, 12v to 5v @ 300mA. I need a 10uH inductor for the job. I was using some big power inductors but I think its overkill and that I could use a smaller inductor.

What do you guys think of the following inductor?

Thanks!

without knowing what controller chip you are using , or at least what switching frequency , mode (hysteretic , constant current, contstant on time ) we cannot advise ...

Sorry, the controller is the NCP3170A (from ONSemi) and it runs at 500kHz.

ideally you would use a 4u7 part with that thing. i'd stick in a vls3012 or vlf4010 series from tdk.
the taiyo you selected will work too. the only thing i don't like about the taiyo is that it is a non-shielded coil. the TDk's i gave above are shielded

if rate current can meet your requirement, you can select, we can also make the chip inductor.
