HF linear amplifier and interference.
« on: September 19, 2021, 02:07:08 pm »
Recently I have added a digital panel volt amp meter to a 10 Amp low voltage power supply. When using the HF transceiver the panel Amp Volt meter flashes and is iratic on the display. Although if I try a different load (halogen lamps) it's completely fine the panel Amp Volt meter reads clear accurate with no problems. Is there a solution to this problem, and if I use the transceiver with just 4 watts RF output, even that causes erratic panel meter display of the numerals. Would putting distance between the power supply and the HF transceiver / linear amplifier correct this problem ? The only thing is I wanted to avoid dropping voltage over a longer supply cable run, although I know keeping a decent wire gauge size would minimise any voltage drop. Any thoughts appreciated, thanks for reading.

Try with decoupling at the PSU's output terminals.
CLC filtering is usually required.
Ferrite toroids with 3-5 turns (10-100uH) and ceramic capacitors (10-100n).

I'm assuming this is one of those inexpensive LED panel meters? My experience with them is they are usually extremely sensitive to RFI. Some decoupling/filtering at the input to the meter will be necessary.

The ferrite bead is your friend.  I have them all over the shack and no problems.  Sometimes a few turns helps.

Yes it is the inexpensive Volts Amp panel meter. I usually use analogue panel meters for Voltage and Amps, with a shunt. But this time tried the little two colour digital panel meter. I don't have anything in the way of filtering to the meter, but can try an inductive capacitance filter, see if that stops it. Thanks for the help.
