Hole pitch of "Montaprint" Veroboard?
« on: December 03, 2023, 04:32:39 pm »
Hi!

From the Dutch Radio History Website N.V.H.R. I found an excellent Stereo and Quadraphonic Amplifiers book called "Quadro- en stereo- versterkerschakelingen" or Quadro and Stereo Amplifier Circuits in English.

There are layout diagrams for the circuits in this book, all built on something called "Veroboard Montaprint ".

Do any of our Dutch friends know anything about this Veroboard and can give me data on it, please?

From the photographs in the book, it looks like it might be 0.15" or 0.2" hole pitch, can anyone confirm this?

I'm happy to pay to have a small piece posted to the UK if anybody has some, to take measurements from, as I can use my "Easy PC" to make Gerber Files to reproduce the boards suggested in the book.

I am also amenable to buying a paper copy of "Quadro- en stereo- versterkerschakelingen" by W. Jak if anyone's amenable!

It's an enigma that's what it is!! This thing's not fixed because it doesn't want to be fixed!!

Is it a stripboard?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stripboard

I think they have 0.1" pitch. You connect rows with a jumper on the components side and cut a row at a hole location with a drill bit.

This forum post from 2006 suggests 0.1 inch hole pitch, to match the 0.1" grid:

https://www.circuitsonline.net/forum/view/30815

Quote
De schakeling was gebouwd op Montaprint dat veel lijkt op het bekende Veroboard, universeelprint met rechte koperbanen in een raster van 0.1 inch.

Google translation: "The circuit was built on Montaprint, which is very similar to the well-known Veroboard, universal print with straight copper tracks in a 0.1 inch grid."

Another Dutch reference from 1980 (pdf page 9):

https://www.scribd.com/document/336630803/Elektuur-205-1980-11

Quote
De schakeling wordt ondergebracht op een ronde shijf montaprint welke met afstandsbussen tegen een dito tweede shijf wordt gemonteerd mat daarop het LED-display.

"The circuit is housed on a round disk montaprint which is mounted with spacers against a second disk with the LED display on it."

There are several manufacturers today for "solderable breadboards."  Even Digikey has its own branded board: https://mm.digikey.com/Volume0/opasdata/d220001/medias/docus/5656/DKS-SOLDERBREAD-02-2022.pdf

I would highly recommend them.  One thing to look for is whether the PTH are connected.  If none are connected, I find it a pain.  Many boards duplicate the connections in typical solderless breadboards.  In the solderable versions, I have noticed that some connect the holes on both sides of the board, while others only connect the holes on one side.    I prefer the latter and make the side with connections on the bottom.  The reason is that you will inevitably need to disconnect between two holes.  It's easier to do that on just one side and is more cosmetically pleasing not to have the breaks on the top.

I often customize my proto boards and order them from JLCPCB, $3.5 for 5 boards shipped. This way I can have the form factor and connectivity I need. Same for SMD to DIP adapters.

For example

I have used Veroboards. While most of them had the 0.1" hole grid, some had a variation which only had every second hole in each row and column. So the holes were on a square root of 2 / 10 grid (0.1414") that was at a 45 degree orientation to the edges of the board. That could perhaps be what is in the book.
