Hook Up Wire Voltage Rating for Connecting DC Links of VFDs

(1/1)

magicsmoke:
I have always assumed that the hook up wire voltage rating is for Vac rms.  For high voltage DC applications does the same voltage rating apply? I need to connect the DC links of three VFDs or AC Drives at nominally 710 Vdc. Would the correct standard voltage rating for the hook up wire be 1000 V (or can I use 600 V rated wire which is more widely available)? The drives are in a pretty cool environment, not subject to UV or chemical exposure, and run for only a very limited period of time.

Any recommendations for sources?

floobydust:
UL 1015 wire is rated 600VRMS or 750VDC. Assuming the wire pulls do not nick the insulation, you need a decent electrician because arc-flash would be catastrophic.

The wire voltage ratings are the voltage (electrical) "class" so 600V could be 625V and still OK.

ConKbot:
I've used MTW (machine tool wire) VW-1 that was 600V rated, that had a secondary 1KV UL type 1032 rating (not sure which type rating you'd need for your application), I got it purely for flexibility at relatively low cost. It was nice and flexible, and had a dual layer insulation (white inner, black outer) made for being able to see nicks easily.
