How does a genuine WS2812 look?
mattselectronics:
Hello,
I was wondering which of my WS2812 based devices use genuine chips. I got most of them from Aliexpress, so I expect some fakes. I put all of them under the microscope and had a look. I was a bit surprised, that all of them were different from each other.
Does anybody know which one (if any) is the genuine WS2812, which ones are cheap fakes and which might be SK6812?
I read that the really cheap copies use aluminum bond wires which are much less reliable. Judging from the color of the bond wires I believe one of them has this kind.
OM222O:
WS2812 is the chip inside the LED. You can see it as the black square / rectangle inside the LED. Any manufafturer that makes LEDs is likely to have a different setup so no surprises there. If you want to check if the IC is geniune, you can't do much besides X ray imaging or decaping the LEDs. Not worth the trouble.

I just realized, that all Leds, exept number 4, have only 4 pins.
The WS2812 is supposed to have 6 pins...
The SK6812 has 4 pins, but which one would be genuine there?
OM222O:
Some of those dies have more than 6 pins, I'm not sure what you're talking about. Also why do you care so much if you bought them off of aliexpress? If you want genuine parts then order from mouser/digikey/farnell, etc.

Why would you need to decap or X-ray it when you clearly can see the IC inside? It will not give any additional information. If you have an original IC to compare, it's pretty easy.
