I finally got my Tesla Coil (Slayer Exciter) working! To see it working (and also see why it wasn't working before), view my youtube video at:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N6YHpKBNrLk (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N6YHpKBNrLk)
I made it from parts I already had (therefore no cost), many of which were recycled parts (removed from other things (such as a non-working UPS)). I previously went through an unbelievable amount of attempts to get it to work, so it is a big relief that it's working now.
And, if you haven't seen my first Tesla Coil tutorial video, you can view it at:

It also covers a lot of electronics stuff (transformers, transistors, transistor switching circuits, power supply design, etc. - really anything with a coil), circuit simulation, electronics kits nostalgia, etc.
