Step by step approach: How to acquire a still image in CMOS Image sensor?

Hello,

I need to understand step by step approach to capture a still image through CMOS Image sensor.
I understand the functionality of CMOS Image sensor, i.e first the photons will hit the photosensitive layer of the sensor and depending on QE of APS, charge will be converted into voltage, amplified and following ADC Conversion will lead to digital value.

But to test the actual image sensor, I need to understand what to connect(external interface and device) with which port of the CMOS Image sensor device . How to perform The readout ?
