Identify a MOV?
« on: April 15, 2024, 02:18:31 pm »
I ordrered a bunch of resistors and they mistakenly gave me a big bag of MOVs, like a couple hundred. I've been looking for a datasheet for these as I could possibly use them for something but I can't find these specifically. The markings are:
221J
1KV
TDK

Couldn't get a good picture of the markings themselves but there's nothing fancy to identify them otherwise. Anyone have any idea where I can find the actual datasheet for these?

Are you sure that's not a 220pF 1KV capacitor? MOVs would usually have a different naming structure.

That's  quite possible. I tried to measure  capacitance with my bench meter but got nothing. I'm not familiar with this type of capacitor so I didn't realize it would have such a small value. I could try ranging it down and checking again.

.....was really hoping it was a MOV lol. Don't have any use for disk capacitors.

those high voltage capacitors are what you want for a HV esd filter (preferably with R) in the most robust package (through hole leaded)

100VDC cap for HV protection, bit dodgy. 1kV cap for HV protection, better. It probably more robust to minor damage also. like for IO

What I was thinking about using them for was an AC servo drive. The OEM uses MOVs wired to the external AC supply connector for surge protection. I obviously didn't order these for that, but I don't suppose these would be of any practical use for that? AC supply voltage is 240V

Just a usual 220pF 1kV ceramic capacitor. Most often can be found in SMPS snubber. https://www.lcsc.com/product-detail/Ceramic-Disc-Capacitors_TDK-CC45SL3AD221JYGNA_C1621521.html

oh you can also probobly solder it across small DC motors in gadgets to improve their EMC performance I think. Just across the leads. Or make a more complicated snubber... but its basically required to fix import goods
