Title: ILS LOC composite waveform
Post by: m98 on March 27, 2022, 09:36:28 pm
Hi,

this might be a bit of a specialized question I could probably answer myself with more effort, but I hope someone might just have an answer ready to go. So basically, I want to generate an ILS localizer signal for the composite input of a CDI.
From what I found, the expected input signal should just be two sine waves at 90 and 150 Hz added together, with the ratio of the amplitudes of the tones determining the needle deflection. I also thought about the ILS energize input, connected that to ground as mandated for ILS operation. Still, my KI 203 doesn't seem to be too impressed, nothing happens at all. I've already implemented a VOR signal, that works just fine. So before I proceed further, is my assumption as how the signal should look like even correct?

Small update, it can't be too wrong, as deflecting the needle actually seems to work as intended. Only problem, the NAV-flag still stays up, despite the signal being a little over the required 360 mV RMS.

I don't mean to be "that guy," (an expression that means someone who, uninvited, finds negative thing to say about any endeavor or opinion), but I'm curious why you're doing that, unless you operate an airport.  Are the signals you're creating at an insignificant enough power not to be able to be received by any aircraft on any frequency they use? I can imagine stray ILS signals creating some VERY dangerous situations for pilots and their passengers.

I'm only emulating the IF signal coming out of the aircraft radio, so no, there is absolutely no possibility that this could interfere with an aircraft.
The goal of my project is to just hook up a real CDI to use with a flight simulator.

Thanks... I didn't realize you weren't broadcasting them, but rather feeding them directly to the CDI without the use of the radio.  My apologies.
