Doing a electronics video channel in native language
« on: November 14, 2014, 01:08:28 am »
Hi guys,
Not sure this is the right section to post this but anyway here it is,

After following Daves videos for some time, I'm thinking about starting a my own video channel to talk about electronics, theory , projects and stuff... but in my native language ( Sinhala to be specific. I'm from small country called Sri Lanka  :) ). Idea is to help sri lankan students to learn electronics. we didn't have any resources while learning electronics where everything was in English, so language barrier was an issue to some extent  :D. So I want to help our students to learn electronics easily and grow the interest to the field  :)

I got everything setup, but still has no clue  :-// on how to start this..... what should be the content of the first video.... or how it should be planned.... This is my first time doing a video so stage fright will also come to play  for some extent  :D. But I highly believe after couple of videos everything will become normal.

I watched Daves very first video to get an idea.... which I got.... but more pointers would be very much appreciated.

Not sure how much I will be successful but please share your opinion and suggestions on this ... thanks :)

it depends on internet penetration among your local people, no penetration, you talk about anything it will not go through. do your community have very good access to internet? or well exposed to it? or awareness? i saw youtube video about one african kid who broadcast his content to local through radio. even in my place i need to tell everybody where my website is, advertisement, ads, ads, ads.... as for your content... maybe you can start on how to light a light bulb, or if its too lame, using transistor to do it.

Hi Mechatrommer,
Thanks for the reply :)

We got internet spread throughout the island so accessibility wouldn't be an issue. However number of followers will be small as electronics is not a wide spread subject in SL. my target is to transfer my knowledge to anyone who interested in electronics. I'm not worried about awareness because of that, and I'm sure people will start watching them if I can do it in a interesting manner.

My idea was to start from scratch like introduction to voltage, current basic electronic components and how to use them etc and then move on to advance stuff eventually so even a beginner can follow what I'm saying.
Electronics is taught in schools in SL but they are strictly limited to theory with very little practicals so students learn them just because they need it to pass exams. So I want to try to change it and show them how interesting is the field and also a little help for their studies.

since you are sri langkan, why the slaughtering of rohingyan people is beyound me.

Hi
I'm not sure what you meant by "rohingyan people"
if you are referring to Muslims I'm not sure where you heard these lies as there is no slaughtering or killing anywhere in SL. but unfortunately Jihad is spreading in Sri Lanka and we see some threats to sinhala people was done by Jihad (like killing cattle heard of Sinhalese and stuff)

but no muslim is killed in SL.

I'm recently on friendly terms with a local small shop that is owned and run by Sri Lankans. They are very friendly indeed, and I am trying to get the wife to invite me for dinner, (oh it smells so good when I pop in at lunchtime).

I guess they are Buddhist or maybe Hindu? (I'm too scared to ask in this PC climate). I'm an atheist, but find all the religions not "of the book" (aka, Jewish, Christian, Muslim) are far more forgiving.

Anyway, that's got sweet f.a. to do with your idea. I can't see any reason why you can't do really good videos in your native language, but you know English and can subtitle the vids in English too. Even English speaking videos are better when subtitled!

Go for it, what have you got to lose?

They could be Buddhist or Hindus as you said. As for me I'm a Buddhist. we believe in patience and harmony  as Buddhism is a philosophy. This is the reason Buddhism has become the most threatened religion. Because of our patience, religions like islam is spreading quickly in sri lanka and destroys Buddhist culture and heritage, they know we will not take arms against them.

anyway to the main topic, I'm wondering how to organize my first video, in which order should it be presented and what kind of style to be used :)

Just a few remarks.

I understand the reason to do it in your native language. On the other hand, there is a large amount of information about electronics which is only available in English. And that isn't going to change in the near future (in the long run it might change to Chinese, but that is another issue). Students will have to face English at some point.

So, if you are thinking about content in your native language, what about a small section in your videos, where your tell people the English translations for some terms? Not a full English course. Fare from it. More like if you handle something like a capacitor you add a remark like "by the way, this is called 'Capacitor' in English".

Introduce yourself. Don't promise too much. Things change. In my work I am a big fan of promising little, and then delivering more. Instead of promising a lot and then later having to say sorry for not delivering.

If this is for students, have a look at a typical textbook. Pick an introductory topic from the book. Devise an experiment and lab setup to show that topic on your bench. I.e. show a simple practical demonstration of the issue. Record the demonstration on video.

Don't use Dave as an example  ;) Dave is in the entertainment business, using Electronics as a vehicle. You seem to have other goals.

opps sorry i mistakenly though rohingya is within myanmar and within sri langka :palm: post cancelled.
https://www.colombotelegraph.com/index.php/is-sri-lanka-heading-towards-a-rohingya-type-attack-on-muslims/
thanks Mechatrommer

truth is Muslims are threatening the harmony in sri lanka. first came the Halal, which caused all people (including non Muslims) to pay additional tax for foods because every company was eager to make their products halal, which caused them to pay money to halal issuing organization. and this payment will be ultimately collected from the customers.

then came sharia, (which commands Muslims to kill any non believer of god, as said in kuran) and now majority of banks in SL has separate sharia banking unit for Muslims. now the problem is shouldn't all other religions request separate banking units for their own religion? like Buddhist banking, christian banking, Hindu banking etc?

as for the latest , Muslim congress (a political party who represents Muslims) is demanding a separate land with separate ruling powers. this is outrageous. Sri lanka is a very small country, why they want a separate land. this is same thing happen to India. first Pakistan was formed by Muslims from India, then it was again divided by another set of Muslims and form Bangladesh.

this is just a surface of whats going on SL. Just wanted to share the truth with you guys even though its totally irrelevant to this thread. :)

yep surely I wasn't going to use purely the native language. most of the terms will be in English. its hard to translate some of these terms to sinhala.

I am on this cross road as you, but my mother tongue language is Arabic. Being an Arab Muslim from Jordan, that will ensure getting quite nice audience if the content is quite good, I think. But, at the same time, I also think of doing it in English because my English language is fairly good and Arabs/Muslims today are quite good with English language too. So I am on the cross roads xD.

That is to be determined later, cuz right now I don't have the capability to do it, no tools, no experiments...

Im thinking of going down the same road....native language Danish. English is no problem for anyone in Denmark, for students either. But we have EEVBlog in the english language...no need to be a copy cat :)
The problem is to define ones audience. I have a plan to target the hobbyists. Not students and not professionels. This means one has to be careful about setting the level of communication too high...not too much math and physics....and if used it should be kept at High School level at most.
