Intel intelligent power note I2C communication
« on: August 15, 2019, 06:15:38 pm »
Background: I have a server board Intel S1200V3RP (S1200V3RPL) and I'm powering it from a 12V pico power supply. The power consumption varies between 15W and 50W. I want to make battery backup power - I'll put buck-boost to provide the stable 12V for the board and then I'll power it from 15 to 19V AC adapter. I'll have switch to provide power from a battery - I'll probably use two diodes as a start.

To the point: The board has I2C/SMBus connector for the power supply. Does someone know if the protocol is described somewhere? I don't know much about SMBus - Is it any different than standard I2C? Can I get SMBus commands from IPMI specification documents?

Most of this is just for fun. The system is working without the I2C connected, but there is a blinking LED for power redundancy lost and the BMC is reporting "reports redundancy has been lost", which is kinda  annoying.

I also want to connect my solar panel to the power sully to reduce power consumption during the day. If I can report the power via I2C it would be nice for logging.

afaiu I2C and SMbus is virtually the same as long as you stay below 100kHz but not so slow you hit the SMbus timeout
