IR-transparent potting compound?
(1/1)
rea5245:
Hi,

I'm looking for a potting compound that will withstand outdoor temperatures and moisture, while being transparent to IR light (850nm). A lot of epoxies don't seem to quantify their transparency in their datasheets. Can anyone recommend one?

Thank you,

Nobody??

A lot of epoxies are pretty chemically similar, so I would expect any transmission chart you find online to be somewhat applicable.

850nm is close enough to the visible light range where any clear epoxy should pass 850nm with relatively little loss. I found this webpage via google which shows some transmission plots of epoxies and you can see they all extend decently far into the IR: https://www.masterbond.com/articles/optical-transmission-properties-adhesives

If you want the epoxy to be opaque to visible light it might be a bit more difficult, you would probably have to source whatever dye they use in IR receiver components that absorbs only visible light and mix that into a clear epoxy.
