Hello, one of my friend lost his laptop power adapter, and he picked up a 14.5v one, used it for several times until I knew that. I think it's not good to use a adapter with higher voltage, but does it really matters, if he continue to use it? Also can we modify that existing adapter to change the voltage a bit, instead of buying a new one? Thanks.

14,5V is only 3,5% higher than 14,0V. Such a variation should be tolerated by the laptop electronics without major issues, so I would just keep using it, not even bothering with lowering the voltage.

Agree with above. You'll rarely find anything these days that can't cope with +- 5-10% variation. They all drop a volt or more under load anyway.
