is there any transparent LCD?
« on: February 14, 2020, 01:58:24 pm »

I am looking for a transparent LCD, 320x240 pixel 1-bit color. Something like those used in OverHead projecting units.

All LCDs are transparent. The deciding factor is the polarizer and reflector/translucent layer, which can be optimized for the application. 1-bit color is monochrome to me.

But they have the LCD-driver and the backlight on the back of the glass, and I do not need to have it on the back. I need something that can be used as an overhead projector. Look at the pics.

If you're only looking to get a few, it would be easier to just get a normal backlit LCD and remove the actual panel from the backlight.

To get a decent looking projector, you're probably going to need some optics.  While taking the LCD panel apart (remove backlight and diffuser layers, basically) will get you something you can project through, it could be tricky to make it look sharp.  Low power projectors are pretty inexpensive these days, can you get your project to output to a VGA port or similar and then just use a commercial projector?

Isn't that always the way ... cheaper to buy a complete generic device and take it apart, than to buy a component.

If people separate the digitiser from the front of touch-screen phone LCDs, you can probably separate the diffuser from the back of a lower-tech, smaller screen. I don't have a special preheater, so would probably use this method:

What physical size do you need? There are nice small monochrome SPI LCDs based on the ST7565 chip, but the resolution is only 128 x 64. USD $4.60 including shipping.

the LCD-diver is usually also on the back of the glass, and it cannot be removed without damaging it.

The biggest possible. 4:3, but at least 5"

It depends on the technology. There are still displays with separate driver PCBs. Example 5.7" 320 x 240 monochrome, but it's $50:

The backlight is generally separate from the LCD main controller (see image). There are two flex cables exiting the display assembly, a wide one with RGB signals and a narrow one (under the text "QX") that is connected to the backlight LEDs. On these ili9341 based displays the LCD is very easy to remove (just unclip the metal casing).

money is not a problem, but the display in the link is similar to what I have here and I cannot simply remove the PCB with the driver because it uses an elastomeric connector to connect to the LCD.

that definitively looks the LCD to go. Thanks!
do you know if there are around even 11inc LCDs made this way?

Yes, there are a lot of 1024x600 7 inch and 9 inch displays that have a similar construction, which is two metal parts clipped together. There are many different part numbers and the drive interface varies from 24 bit parallel RGB interface to 4 lane LVDS interface. A few part numbers from a quick taobao search: HSD070IFW1, CLAA090NA06CW

Yes, would definitely go for those panels with LED backlighting, easier to remove. Avoid the simple monochrome LCDs with a reflector on the back side, it's often glued on and almost impossible to remove cleanly unless you heat the panel up (which would destroy the liquid crystal stuff...)

Unclip these clips:

After removing top cover (controller chips highlighted):

LCD is not held down and can be removed:

Or one can buy an "lcd projector", which is an lcd in front of a bright light with focusing optics.

These are used in projectors. They are small but very high resolution. A movie projector uses 3 of them with a color filter and a prism to combine the image. If you only use 1, without a color filter you can project a black and white image. I have been looking into using them with a high powered UV LED for maskless lithography. Seems like you are trying to do something similar. You can add a lens if you want to reduce or scale the projected image.

If you need bigger ones your best bet is to contact a manufacturer on Alibaba or Aliexpress and have them send you a few without the reflector on the back. They are quite accommodating and if you use one of their standard sizes I doubt they will charge you extra. They can also attach a connector onto the lcd instead of just having the polymer strips. I had my own problem with those while trying to use old cordless phone screens.

I recently picked up one of these clocks for my shop, it had the clear display with the LCD digits appearing on it.  Ended up returning it because it was hard to read unless you had a pretty well lit background to place it against.

eBay lists lots of transparent 128x64  LCD's  for about $4.00.  Jumping to 5+ inch, look for replacement LCD's for masked SLA resin printers, e.g., AnyCubic and a lot of others.  Here's one: https://www.ebay.com/itm/Anycubic-Module-2K-Light-Curing-Display-Screen-5-5-LCD-F-Photon-3D-Printer-P0J8/143506130065?hash=item2169a1c491:g:xMkAAOSwkkxeJECx

As mentioned, some 3D printer owners find it cheaper to buy a regular LCD and remove the backlight.
