Issue with the RX8025 RTC, any pointers welcome!

Hi all,
https://support.epson.biz/td/api/doc_check.php?dl=app_RX-8025SA&lang=en
I'm currently working with the EPSON RX8025 RTC (datasheet above) but I can't set he value in control register 1. There are 16 registers in the device all accessed by I2C, only register 0x0D is reserved. I can read and write the time, control register 2 and all the others but not control register 1! I have read through the whole datasheet and some example code to look for something like a lock but can't find anything other than the strange addressing. I've checked the logic analyser but it's all good. I find this most peculiar.
If anyone has any advice or pointers it would be much appreciated.
Thanks

I have tried two different PCBs and replaced the RTC on both.

Okay, I have solved it. I was setting the calibration after the control registers which are reset after a calibration.
