Dark theme on Windows 10
« on: August 02, 2016, 09:01:10 am »
Hi All

Why is it so difficult to get a dark theme on windows 10. I find the white background on all the windows and apps is really tiring on my eyes. I just want a dark background. There are loads of hacks on google about how to implement it but they did not work or just seemed a lot of work.

Does anyone know of a theme that works? I know it can be done because high contrast manages it but high contrast looks really ugly.

Anniversary update adds a dark theme. Should be out any time now.

About what are you talking now? you started with a theme... and then talk about a background? If you just want a background, here is mine. As I can't upload it here (file too big), I send my dropbox link:

English is only my 3th language, so don't tell me my english is bad, becose I know that, I try to do what I can...

Hi. Thanks for the background. What I refer to is the back ground colour of windows. I prefer to have a white text on black background for things. That kind of colour styling rather than the wallpaper background on my desktop

Doesn't white-on-black leave a huge afterimage on your eyes when you look around at the world or go to a web page? It does for me.

If your eyes hurt then try turning the monitor brightness down.

If you go to accessibility settings you can choose a "high contrast theme", and change some colors in there. There's one with dark background as a starting point.

I think you are possibly right about white on black. But I do know that black on white is not good for me. I need a darker background colour. Lets hope the update comes soon and has some decent theme options.

I have nothing good to say about windows 10  its got a lot in common with vista's bloatware . IMO microsoft has gone to the dark side. by trying to sneak in a 1GB slab of windows 10 in to my the windows7 update, as automatic install.  IMO microsoft is trying to add an {App Store} to Windows . so to do this thy need to replace all older windows OS like Win 7 with Windows 10 ,  I had to manually delete the Win 10 install, to save my Win 7 from Win 10 destruction. IMO microsoft wants you to BUY a dark desktop background from them.

Yeah its ridiculous how much they are pushing Win 10 down our throats. Okay it is better than Win8 but i still see no benefit of it over win 7.

My dad not long ago got a laptop with win 10 on it and despite him being a function over form guy (He preferred the old winXP graphics over vista and 7 and kept using XP for a long time before finally going to win7) and he still thought that win 10 looks too ugly. We tried various stuff to try and make it look nicer but found there is not much you can do without using 3rd party tools to hack in a new look.

Why does everything have to have this oversimplified aesthetic to it? I thought Win 7 looked gorgeous when it came out and its still the best looking OS in my opinion.

They're trying to make it look like a phone. I don't think that's a good thing either. :--

I prefer Windows Classic, not too flashy but not too bland and featureless either.

The real problem is they don't offer anybody a choice.

Hi,

I added a proper dark theme (black) to my Win7 install.....called STEAM. Proper dark backgrounds to dialogues and pop-ups etc.
Need it because I suffer from dry eyes (reducing monitor brightness isn't enough).
STEAM modifies some system files, it's not just a theme pack (limited).

Some apps don't adhere to the new colours, i.e. the likes of Thunderbird (email) and Firefox, but they can be adjusted manually.

Perhaps they have a Win10 edition.......don't remember where I got the Win7 version from.

Can you no longer apply classic windows (9x era) styles/themes anymore?

I totally agree with you all, I hate Windows 8 and 10 too, but there is a case you must use windows 10, yes, when you install windows on a machine with 32-bit level 3 UEFI, the only choice is Windows 8/10, because no other windows offer 32-bit UEFI support...
And I found best Windows 10 versions, they are Enterprise ltsb N series(I cannot find a KN with ltsb), so that's the most unbloat version, with nearly no useless things like edge, cornata, etc. It have Ads disabled and will only update security fixs, and you have the most control over the system(you cannot disable bad things like ads or auto update even in Pro version). Yes you still have a double setting center(control panel and metro setting panel), still have a strange start menu, still have to deal with a simi-phone UI, but... it's already better than Windows 8, and better than any other Windows 10, when you have to pick one.
