Current measurement question
« on: April 14, 2014, 05:30:20 pm »
I've got a dual power supply and have worked out a quick load using an old stove eye just to test that the current limit is working.  The eye has a resistance of 38.5 ohms and the power supply outputs up to 30V @ 3A.  Using an ohms law calculator on line, the max amps I should be drawing through this is 0.77922 and 23.37662 watts at 30V but when I put my meter in the circuit, I'm showing 8A draw.  If I keep this thing hooked up it gets warm enough to the touch that it starts being uncomfortable to hold in my hand.  Current has always mystified me even though I know the math behind it.  Anyone have any idea of what's going on here or do I just have a crappy meter that can't measure current in a circuit realistically?

Edit: Nevermind, I forgot to put the leads in the correct jacks.  I'm showing .78A now, what a boob I am.
