kCube - LED cube design revisited

The most expensive parts will be the 512 LEDs which alone will cost me USD86. These are original brand APA parts sourced locally in China. There may be cheaper sources but I don't want to risk getting counterfeit parts. I'm not close yet to being able to calculate a kit price, but I target something in the order of 150 to 200€. Edit: forgot to mention, I am going to sell kits for self assembly. No soldering or machining involved, but for this kit glueing and working with fluid (glycerine).

it took me quite a few redesigns of the mechanical support framework for the flex PCBs in place, but it finally works now. A lot of thought had to go into finding a solution that would be as easy to assemble as possible, without the need of glue. This is how that looks like at the moment. I haven't lit up the new boards yet, but MultiCB is already making adapter boards. I'll be able to show the completed cube soon :-)

Sorry for digging up this old thread, but I am really curious how your project turned out. Did you go on with the project?

I have the almost-finished prototype sitting here on a shelf, because I wasn't happy with two aspects. The one is that the refraction indices between PET (PCB material) and glycerine don't differ much on the paper, but the difference is still visible quite clearly (photo). That's likely unavoidable because that was the best combination that I could find. The bigger problem is that the sealing concept didn't work out. My plan was to glue the 8 flex cables together, and then put glue into the cutout where they exit. This didn't work and I have to rethink. But the main "problem" is that the business that I had started in 2017 goes so well that I have virtually no time to drive smaller side projects like this. However that doesn't mean that I want to cancel this project :-)
