I'd say yes, but....  BR are designed for more temperature tolerance than CR batteries.  If the battery is helping store calibration data, I'd make sure to some how wire up some 3V power in parallel to the battery so that you don't lose data when it is removed.

Technical Data - Table 1 - (CF)n/LI: Poly-Carbon Monofluoride (BR)
Technical Data - Table 2 - Mn02/LI:Manganese Dioxide (CR)

Coin type lithium batteries are high energy, high reliability batteries for a variety of applications. The 3 volts in these high energy density batteries is about twice that of conventional dry batteries.

Panasonic coin type lithium batteries are available in two types: poly-carbonmonofluoride lithium batteries (BR series) for uses that require extended reliability and safety over a broad temperature range and manganese dioxide lithium batteries (CR series) for uses that require and strong load pulse characteristics.

The CR Lithium primary coin cells contain Perchlorate over the limit specified by the state legislature of California and are therefore subject to requirements in the California Code of Regulations, title 22, division 4.5: Chapter 33 – Best Management Practices for Perchlorate Materials.

•Very safe (poly-carbonmonofluoride lithium)  <------------
•Extremely strong load pulse characteristics (manganese dioxide lithium)
•Operating temperature range:
•BR Coin Cells: -30ºC ~ +80ºC <------------
•CR Coin Cells: -30ºC ~ +60ºC

To be safe, probably should stick with the BR battery, you don't want it popping and ruining your nice gear.

Is there a battery in the Agilent 34970A?
Yes. A 3.0-volt lithium battery, A1BT101, is used to power the real-time clock, stored state, and reading storage memory with line power removed. The battery has a nominal lifetime of 4 years and can be replaced by the user. The battery is soldered into the 34970A. This battery does not affect the calibration memory.

A low battery will typically give errors when ac line power is removed and then re-applied. Any of the following errors may indicate a low battery:

•201, "Memory lost: stored state"
•202, "Memory lost: power-on state"
•203, "Memory lost: stored readings"
•204, "Memory lost: time and date"
Replacement battery Agilent part number 1420-0860. Refer to the 34970A Service Guide for verification and replacement procedures.p.

Newark also

Just to be sure, does your battery stand up or sit flat?

For the record, I have changed the battery in the same Agilent 34970A chassis.
It was a SANYO cR14250SE already, so I have just replaced it.
