LED Strip
« on: March 03, 2019, 03:40:39 am »
I am working on a project for Astronomy use.   specifically I am making a flat panel,  basically a lighted panel that produces a very flat light across the entire surface used to remove optical imperfections from my imaging train.
I am having trouble sourcing the led strip.
I'm not sure if this is the correct place to asked for this type of help but it seem the best option for me.

I need a 6500K LED strip that is no more than .25in wide to go into my channel that will edge light a piece of ACRYLITE® LED sheet,
I really want it to also be 12V to work with my observatory power.
The kind used in office LED ceiling panels would work but they are 24V.   I am more after the 12V and current is not as much a concern.

Does anyone know of LED strips that meet that criteria or can point me to a good parametric chart to find it?

Thanks
Sandra

For more uniform light source, look up el (electro luminecent) wire instead of LED strip.

It might be easier to take a dumpstered LCD TV and essentially scavenge the whole backlight system instead of DIY. They have many layers of high-tech light spreader films that produce more even illumination than is easy to DIY. Just remove the actual LCD layer, and possibly the top film, which directs the light forward (reducing off-angle illumination which may be necessary for your application).

Thanks for the replies,
I checked the URLs and the only led strips I could find that were in the .25" width were 24v which doesn't meet my spec.

Reason I am going LED Strip is size,  a decent EL Panel that is 24"x24" plus inverter is around $400 and I do need it to have variable brightness.
for my light diffuse I am using this
https://www.acrylite.net/product/acrylite/en/products/acrylite-led/
then some additional diffusion plus air space to get the flatness I'm after.

im not sure why you would want a bunch of stray light when your doing astronomy
but i use , LED Voltmeter DC-DC 4.5-32V to 5-52V XL6009 Boost , to control my cob leds  from a battery
it has full dimming through voltage control,  its a 10 to 15w module
there are other boost drivers that can handle more power , i prefer the ones with only voltage control, current control is not needed
the voltage adjustment gives a wide range of dimming

if you want a brand name driver with more power go for this
https://www.digikey.com.au/product-detail/en/mean-well-usa-inc/LDH-45A-1050W/1866-5295-ND/7704776
it requires an extra purchase of a 1k potentiometer and 7.5k resistor if you want to use the dimming feature
pic shows the wiring of the pot and resistor , i had trouble wiring it at first
