Lighting of a staircase
(1/1)
gaminn:
Hi,
I would like to design an ambient lighting for a staircase. I'm even thinking of using it as a main lighting.
(This is only an illustrative picture of a staircase)
There will be digital LED strips built in handrail. As a man goes along the handrail, the LED strip should light on, the light should move with the man.
The question is what sensors to use to detect position of a man to turn on corresponding part of a LED strip? The sensors can be built in handrail, they can be also on walls, whatever. PIR, some proximity sensors, ghz radar?
Marco:
Microwave motion sensor modules are really cheap and can be hidden well.

Security pressure mats?

If you can afford one per stair, that is, and find a way to hide the wiring somehow.

I think the very last thing you want in a stairwell is quickly and possibly unpredictably changing light levels.
I would think an area PIR to light up and entire floor's worth is probably as far as I'd go.
If you want to "make it cool", maybe have the LED string chase / fill when initially lighting up and shrink / fade when turning off, but I would be very leery of trying to follow the human closely.

We have exactly this solution in our office building and I hate it. You step into the darkness and then wonder for few moments whether motion sensor is in working condition. And then, as you move between floors, you continue evaluating responsiveness of every PIR switch or lack of thereof.
The best staircase is constantly lit staircase.
