How to pick a good quality fan?
« on: November 18, 2014, 06:43:08 pm »
My 3D printer arrived with a 40mm square 12V fan that started to make funny noises after two weeks of use. I am looking at Digikey for a better quality fan but am not sure which manufacturer and bearing type to chose. Any suggestion?

Here is Digiky link that narrows the search, hopefully it will work for you

Any bearing will be fine but get a brush less one

avoid sleeves unless you mount the motor axis parallel to the earth.

Dual ball bearing are the best in terms of long-lasting but they do tend to have a bit more bearing noise. I pretty much always pick dual ball bearing fans, but I am pretty much not sensitive to fan noise at all. Honestly, you might want to check out some web sites like frozenpc.com or performance-pcs.com as they have very large selections of fans, however they will not have the best prices.

Any decent brand fan with ball bearings will do. As this is 3D printer, fan noise shouldn't be an issue. Sunon Maglev series will do the job fine too, life is comparable (Edit: actually a bit higher according to what sunon says in their documents) to ball bearings and can be mounted under angle without issues.
