Title: Looking for an extra tall female header or equivalent
Post by: kolyur on November 12, 2024, 06:33:40 pm
I'm working on a design where I will have to attach another PCB to my board. The other board has a 2x10 0.100" shrouded male header and this cannot be changed. The distance from the base of this header to my PCB is 1.357" and is set by the mechanical design. I do have a bit of control over this distance but not much. I'm looking for a component that I can solder to my board to make this connection. The connection does need to be pluggable into the male header, although it will rarely if ever be disconnected. In a perfect world it would be a 2x10 female header with 1.357" insulated height, but the tallest female headers I can find are only about 3/4". There seem to be lots of options for stacking male headers but not the other way around. Any suggestions for how to achieve this? Thanks.

You could stack two female headers, if the upper one has suitable pins. (0.64 mm square cross section or such.) That would require that the two boards are held together mechanically by other means, of course. If the connection is not meant to be taken apart often, that should work.

If you find a female header with extra-long pins ("wire wrap" style), you could also mount the header spaced away from the PCB. But I am not sure whether suitable spacers (with holes a t0.1" pitch) are available. Depending on the number of units you need to build you could 3D print someting. Or, if the plugging operation does not have to be very robust, you can get away with some simpler spacer which just defines the distance during the soldering step, or with no spacer at all.

has to be rigid? can't you just use a IDC ribbon CABLE? all lengths available..
