Rec. for 1st Vacuum Tube Audio Amp DIY Project?
« on: November 17, 2014, 09:14:47 pm »
Hi All, I am looking for a vacuum tube audio amp kit to put together with my 13-y-o daughter.  I have plenty experience soldering and working with electrical components, and would like to share the joy of putting something together with her.  I, never having had experience with audio projects, list what I think should be the characteristics in what I am looking for (however, I could totally be off base on one or more of the characteristics):
  • wattage high enough for powering a pair of small professional speakers (which will be enough for professional headphones)
  • clean power is more important than pure power
  • pre-etched PCB (I've etched my own, but it's been a while and I certainly would prefer a clean look)
  • option to select "better" parts (like higher quality capacitors)
  • under $300?
  • does not need to have an enclosure, as I can make my own
  • once parts are assembled, something we can put together over a couple (or couple+?) weekends
Any thoughts would be appreciated.

I'd be concerned about the high voltages required for most valve circuits.

Perhaps solid state is safer option, at least for a first project?

You seem to be looking for a kit. Something in the 0.5w/1w, assuming reasonably efficient speakers, should be more than sufficient.

I considered this, and am fairly confident there won't be any issues--mainly because she will be relegated to working on some soldering.  We'll be careful and read that thread on safety! :D
