Does anybody know what this is?
« on: August 25, 2020, 10:33:35 am »
Hi

I suspect it could have something to do with cable management. Made of plastic.
What is it called?

Thanks

Context is important, i.e. what is it off of / out of?  Without that, all we can tell you is its a proprietary piece of black plastic, possibly a nit comb for giant porcupines!  :-DD

Looks like it could be used as a cheap/disposable grout spreader.

That gave me a good laugh now.
 :-DD

I got it together with a lot of electronics components that I have bought from a bankrupt company's auction. They designed and manufactured telecoms equipment. Thats about all I know.
It kind of reminded me of a test lead holder. Such as the one in the picture. Cant see how you would fasten this piece of plastic to a wall though.

Might also have something to do with network cable management.

Don't want anyone to break their head about it. Would just be interesting to know.

Thanks for your reply.

Yes possibly. I have discovered a couple of non-electronics related items amongst the lot that I bought. This might be one of them.

Good guess

It has to be A thingamabob  and it connects the whatsername  to the other thingamabob .
Don't loose it as they are very rare . and normally only found after removing the packing .
If your lucky you will find the rest  >:D

I think it wont help you to know its the safety shield that has to be removed before installing a panel .
Protection plate . void warranty if removed
The really long telecom wire terminal blocks

only other use is that Halloween is soon may give it a recycled use

You'd gotta be kidding me, right?  I see that right away, but worked as manufacture tech, that is for tech bench having various test leads. You attach level, up around five feet off floor.
See also, there is (second photo I'm talking about), the fingers each has a little uplift in end, again for slide your  clip leads or scope probe w leads.
OR, was that pict, just someone posted as nearly same? In which case, sorry I wrong there.
Thanks

Oops, yeah my bad, I see myistake, that was your pict, a test lead holder.
Now as to the multi-finger job: might be a flat spring, for manage many small cables. Plastic, so it is not for electrical shielding: you might test if that plastic conducts, then it might be shield extension for a little door or hatch. We're there other items, looking like for shipping, tie downs etc. Then it might not have function after ships.

Ikea sells a cable management device that attaches to the bottom of tables or desks.. It has multiple fingers, you put your power strips etc on the top and then tie them down, you can then make your wires neater by threading them through the fingers as needed. Something like that, perhaps.

Ot it could be like the pomona test lead holder except intended to be used in different settings, assuming it has some mounting holes in it, does it?

Like most of us I sure could use a test lead holder..
But not when I saw the price..  $22 each!

Ebay has one solitary listing at $15
There has got to be a better way.

This reminds me of a similar probe-positioner clothes-pin situation.

Again I forgot to attache the picture.

Posted a blank how embarrassing.

In any event I have to comment on the price.  To put is simply steel isn't cheap and for the unit to hold up well at all you need a fairly heavy gage of steel to begin with.    I've actually looked into making one as you indicate the cost is high but I'm not sure it is even cost effective to try to DIY.   I have a reasonable amount of metal working tools in the home shop and frankly it would be hard to recreate that stamped object quickly.

So yeah expensive but that is likely due to low volume / low demand.   I wouldn't be surprised if the setup charge to run a batch off is a good part of the going price.

On a side note, back in my youth I spent a couple of years working in a die cast foundry.   Some of the customers had items that ran off in an hour (maybe a hundred parts).   Being of little mass the parts where cheap but the company saddled the customer with a pretty stiff setup charge.   That charge spread across the entire run likely added $2+ to the cost of each part.   Low volume sucks for everybody involved.

Like most of us I sure could use a test lead holder..

Its a stress releif off a 24 port patch panel as best I can tell. Each wire would be zip tied to each comb to support it
