Looking for USB to JST cables
tszaboo:
Hi. I'm designing a gadget, that would have a permanently attached USB cable. Having a micro (or similar) connector on it is not an option. So I saw that in (for example) computer mouses, they use a JST or similar connector on the PCB and they just have a cable assembly that goes on the board.
I'm looking to source these cable assemblies. This design is not for for high performance/industrial, so something from alibaba/express is also fine. Did you ever come across these cables?
Thanks.

Just thinking here - if it is a hobby project and you want a cable permanently attached, why not simply sodering the cable directly?
Also I do not know what the project will be used, but whether you use a JST-like connector or solder it directly, it will not like stress on the cable an the connector/connection - i.e. if it is to put somewhere and not touch it then fine, but if it is something like a mouse where the cable will move all the time then it might break.

If you want a connector, JST or otherwise (Molex KK 256 is not too bulky either, for instance), it's not too difficult to assemble it. Preferably, you need a crimping tool (I use this cheap and good™ one).

Two simple ways to handle mechanical stress on the cable connection could be
- make a hole at the edge of the PCB and use a plastic cable tie to attach the cable to the board
- if a device has some enclosure, put a plastic cable tie on the cable inside the enclosure, so that it stops cable from being pulled out through the hole
A lot of variations is possible, of course :)

I had a look around 1688.com and found a seller of various types...
Here is USB A to JST XH
https://detail.1688.com/offer/624647879144.html?spm=a2615.7691456.autotrace-offerGeneral.13.191d3db2apLttb
They do lots of different "something to JST/Dupont/Other PCB Connector" type of cables actually...
https://shop1qh9445450m13.1688.com/page/offerlist.htm?spm=a261y.7663282.autotrace-topNav.4.35b93a78VdSEBK
Easiest way to buy from 1688 if you are not in China is to use superbuy.com (or other agent, but superbuy is my pick at the moment).

No, I may want to make (or have them make) a few hundred of these.
