Mega problem with resistors
« on: July 15, 2020, 04:57:47 pm »
Recently, while dealing with oscillators, I realised that I only have 1MOhm resistors at this high value.

I've looked into getting a few in the MOhm range: 1.5, 2.2, 3.3, 4.7, 6.8, 10 but buying them separately is a pain and pricey.

Does anyone know of a convenient batch of assorted resistors of this high value anywhere ... even eBay?

Cheers.

Mouser, digikey, rs components, all have them for cheap. Even a reel of 2500 won't be "pricy" for the volume.

I bought mine on eBay. They are good enough. Google for "Resistor kit". Look for 2000 pcs or more.
For example, metal film, through-hole.

And, if you need SMD/SMT, then Here it is, 0805. - I got 0805 and 1206 book kits. Those book kits are very convenient.

Unlike semiconductors we may buy resistors from China surely.  :-+

But the OP wants values > 1 Mohm.

I've run into the same problem - I think there is a niche market for high-resistance resistor packs.

For sure! High value resistors are more of a vacuum-tube era thing...

If you have limited budget and hobbyist projects are on your mind, I would simply skip some values and compose them from lower resistances. You do not need 2.2MΩ, you can use 2× 1MΩ. This way you can buy in 100s. If you are not constrained by space or having specific requirements about inductance, I see little reason to have exact-valued resistors. Even in professional setup it may be better for BOM optimization to go for some common values.

I don’t know how shipping looks like after Brexit, but you may look at what TME offers: 1/4W carbon THTs start at 0.70 GBP/100pcs, 1/2W metal film THTs start at 2.68 GBP/100pcs.

You may also find some fellow hobbyists locally, order larger quantity of various values and split the costs.

People imagine AI as T1000. What we got so far is glorified T9.

Why not just add a few to your next Digi-Key/Mouser/Farnell order? They don’t cost that much...

Can get you quite far, especially for a hobby project.

I just buy kits like this: https://www.aliexpress.com/item/32370322093.html . I have 0805, 0603 and TH 1/4W kits. I wouldn't use them in precise circuits, but for general stuff they work great. Just don't forget to measure the actual value smd tweezers before use (just in case, never got wrong value in my kits, but sometime I read smd code incorrectly).

Some aliexpress/ebay vendors are eager to get your business and are willing to try to source special orders, so you might just ask around.

Might not make sense in this case, but something to keep in mind.
