Source for decent quality surplus speakers in the UK?
« on: April 01, 2014, 02:02:24 pm »
Inspired by the recent Hackaday post, I have decided to make a portable Li-Poly powered boombox. I am thinking 4x3W 4r mid-range speakers (or maybe 2x6W) and one 15-20W subwoofer.

I remember reading a while ago on the forum that you can get surplus / outdated speakers of good quality for  a comparatively low price, but I can't find any sites: suggestions? I am in the UK.

My budget is a total of £50.

No idea sorry. However, if you wish to stoop down to car audio speakers, they can be had pretty cheaply; currently these are on sale with free shipping; http://www.caraudiocentre.co.uk/product_m-kenwood-kfc-e1052_p-26123.htm

That and a reasonable class d amplifier should be quite nice in a boom box. No real need for a subwoofer IMHO.

The problem with Surplus speakers in particular, it it typically means broken speakers. Just get yourself some cheap 2 way auto speakers. That should do the trick! Many times your auto parts stores will have some cheap models, and there is always online.. You might be suprized how good a $20 auto speaker can actually sound for just a boom box type thing.

Ok, I will. I see that the 2-way (or even 3-way) ones have built in tweeters (+midrange for 3-way) so that sounds good.

Thanks!
