Okay, to be fair, after reading the article they do have a valid point, but it will only work if the unloading point is further down than the mine.

Now I am curious to know, how did they manage to convert the potential energy into electric energy via the brakes. A lot of heat? And Seebeck converters?

It's called regenerative braking.....it turns the drive motor into a generator.

Using rocks as battery, neat! But yeah, money talks, hence why electric cars are such a hit in Norway.

Obviously, this truck is custom made for this particular mine which happens to be situated on top of a mountain.
That fact coupled with the fact that they intend to operate the mine for many years makes this a very nice project. It should pay for itself over the lifetime of the machine.

Nobody is suggesting that all dump trucks all over the world will run on "free energy" that's ridiculous.
