Musical Tesla Coil
(1/1)
Saitama:
Hello! I have built a tesla coil and now I'm trying to make a driver circuit for it. I am planning to use 2xG4PC50FD in a half-bridge circuit, but the problem is that I don't have much time left, because I'm going to a different country and I don't have MOSFET driver ICs (I couldn't find any in the local stores). I already built an interupter and I was wandering if i could use couple of transistor as amplifier and NOT gates to drive the GATEs of the IGBTs that way. I don't have much time to research, so that's why I came here.
I will appreciate every reply.
Thanks in advance!

Q4 is an inverter, Q1 and Q2 are a buffer which could drive a FET if sufficiently powerful transistors are chosen. Divide FET gate charge by intended rise/fall time and see how much current you need. Note that R2 must be low enough to provide sufficient Q1 base current and high enough that it doesn't fry Q4 or itself.

The hardest part is pushing the gate through the threshold voltage region, usually 3~4V. This is where R2/Q1 need to work effectively if the FET is to turn-on quickly.

Also, if Q4 is powerful enough, Q2 can be replaced with a diode. Then you only need two transistors of the same kind.
